While I may have recently lamented that awards season was over, it appears I spoke too soon. How could I forget?! The MTV Movie Awards are scheduled for April 14th and are arguably one of the more entertaining broadcasts on TV; where else is it acceptable for a flying Sacha Baron Cohen to land butt first on Eminem?
Here’s a breakdown of those that fortune favored and those it didn’t:
Notably absent among most of the categories this year is “The Twilight Saga’s” swan song, “Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” While the franchise usually dominates the MTV scene, it unfortunately failed to rack up any noms in the competitive “Movie of the Year” or acting categories apart from a “Best Shirtless Performance” nod for Taylor Lautner. Perhaps “Breaking Dawn’s” strong run at a certain other, less prestigious awards ceremony killed its momentum…
Ah, well “Twilight”, you had your time in the sun and unfortunately it has come to an end, but with the franchise’s demise, new hope arrives for several underdogs that did not get much love from the Academy. The delightful “Silver Linings Playbook” scored nominations in “Movie of the Year,” “Best Female Performance,” and “Best Male Performance,” among others. While the competition may have been much too fierce this year at the Oscars for it go home with any gold (apart from J. Law of course), MTV seems like the perfect spectrum for it to get the recognition it so deserves.
Last summer’s comedy hit “Ted” also cleaned up pretty well with seven nominations overall (Fingers crossed for a “Best On-Screen Duo” win! How can you compete with a man and his teddy bear best friend, really?), as did Quentin Tarantino’s western opus “Django Unchained.” Comic book fans will also get their day in the sun as Marvel and DC go head to head with “The Avengers” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” both battling for Movie of the Year.
