While we hate to open 2013 writing about a tragedy, there are some instances that deserve coverage if only to try and prevent such sad events from happening again. One such fatal event has occurred, and it unfortunately revolves around the chaotic celebrity of Justin Bieber.
Last night on Los Angeles’ 405 freeway, a paparazzo attempting to get photos of the teen singing sensation was killed when an SUV slammed into him.
Apparently, the photographer was following Justin Bieber’s Ferrari on the evening of New Year’s Day when he saw police pull the vehicle over, off the 405. After exiting his vehicle and attempting to take more pictures, he was returning to his car on police orders when he was reportedly struck. He died from his injuries later that night at nearby Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
In a bit of tragic irony, the pop singer wasn’t even in the car – it was instead being driven by a few of his friends. Bieber, however, did release a statement, extending his prayers to the family of the victim, and touching upon the sad circumstances. “Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation,” he stated “and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders, and the photographers themselves.”
The controversy over safety and the paparazzi has long been a hot-button issue, as there seems to be no clear line-in-the-sand. While some celebrities have been able to carve out quiet and private lives for themselves (and even use the photographers to promote good deeds), there are others that are consistently hounded and one has to wonder when enough will be enough.
Hopefully, it won’t take more of these tragedies for some sort of action to take place. With the start of the New Year, let’s try to remember to treat ourselves and each other, including all the celebrities we adore, with respect; it’s one resolution we all can keep.
