Hiddles. Hiddlestoners. While it may seem like I’m speaking complete gibberish, I’m actually not. These are just a few of the names that have been adopted by an ever-increasing and rabidly-loyal fandom for actor Tom Hiddleston.
Now some of you may be thinking: Tom who? Or perhaps you vaguely recognize the name but can’t quite place it.
Well, I’ll give you a little hint: The guy starred in the biggest blockbuster of 2012, and pretty much stole the show from such talents as Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth – obviously not an easy feat. Yup, Hiddles played the one and only Loki, primary foe in “The Avengers” and its Marvel predecessor “Thor.”
“The Avengers” was a truly enjoyable action-fest that deserved to be seen for all of the superheroes involved, but it was Loki that stood out to me, and apparently to legions of other fans as well. Truth be told, it actually made me wonder whether bowing down and letting him rule the world would really be such a bad thing…
And while the role of the power-hungry god of mischief has brought him to the forefront of the Hollywood mainstream, unlike his villainous alter ego, he hasn’t let the success go to his head. The English actor, who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, has found the time to pick some more independent fare in-between donning the horned helmet and cape. From playing F. Scott Fitzgerald in Woody Allen’s lovely escape into the past “Midnight in Paris,” to Henry V in BBC Two’s Shakespearean adaptation, it’s clear the guy’s got range and has even hinted that directing might be in his future.
He shows no signs of slowing down at the moment, having recently wrapped Jim Jarmusch’s vampire flick “Only Lovers Left Alive” and has 3 more films slated this year alone (including the “Thor” sequel!). You won’t see me complaining about seeing his mug everywhere, and I’m pretty sure the Tumblr-verse is cool with it too. (Seriously. I dare you to check out the Tom Hiddleston tag on Tumblr.)
And, of course, he’s quite charming to boot:
Yes, 2013 looks to be a big year for Tom Hiddleston, even if us Hiddlestoners may be weeping over the possibility of a Loki-less “Avengers” sequel. Say it isn’t so!
Something tells me, however, that Tom will be fine. He’s an extremely talented actor, and we can expect some big things from him as his star continues to rise.
